Business
What is involved in working in the Business industry?
Work within the Business industry involves working with clients, staff and other organisations. Work will take place in an office, usually at a desk, working with computers, phones and paperwork. This can involve working with a team of other employees, or sometimes you might be the only one working on your level, eg. Reception work. It involves the establishment and maintenance of professional relationships (often including customer and staff service) records, procedures and policies, resources and other organizational systems that meet the needs of the individual company, and your specific position therein.
Is the Business Profession for me?
A career in business can be a demanding and extremely rewarding path to take if you have a passion for efficiency and attention to detail, and you enjoy the challenge of taking on a variety of tasks and roles, and seeing a business develop and grow. The responsibilities of a business professional include a commitment to the profile of the company – ensuring all the correct systems are in place to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Desirable personal qualities of a business professional are friendly, organized, good communication skills, self motivated, team oriented and a fast learner.
What does the work involve?
Responsibilities of a business professional include learning how to operate, create and maintain both digital and physical records, liaising with clients and other staff members (via phone, person, fax, email, mail), operating office machinery such as photocopiers, switchboards, faxes, phones, not to mention using a broad range of computer skills, including specific software for documents, spreadsheets and databases.
What are the career options?
The career options for a business administrator or a business frontline manager are to work your way from the ground floor of a company where you might be following the direction of your superiors up to a more managerial or even directorial position, where you would be responsible for managing specific areas of the company, or directing the overall aims of the organization and/or co-coordinating a team of staff members.
What are the benefits of becoming qualified?
Becoming qualified shows a commitment to your industry and a desire to be as professional as possible. While it is not a requirement by law that business staff be qualified, having a certificate to put on your resume would make you more attractive to employers and potentially give you a foot in the door. If you are already employed, gaining your certificate shows your employer you are committed to improving regardless of how secure your job is, and this sort of attitude might help you land that promotion you’ve been going for. For those already in the industry gaining a qualification can be personally rewarding as you gain both recognition of your competencies and the confidence to continue to grow your career.
