Student Support Information
As a student of CMC Training at Work – what support is available to me?
CMC Training at Work value our commitment to our students, and offer a range of services developed and implemented to support all learning needs.
- Campuses - CMC Training at Work has established campuses not only for the purpose of administration and class based delivery, but to ensure students have a familiar and welcoming environment to access various other services. All campuses are located close to public transport and major shopping and food areas. Utility services such as laminating, photocopying and faxing are available at our Melbourne and Brisbane campuses. Use of these utility services may attract a small fee.
See our location details for addresses of our campuses.
- Student Support Officer – Based on campus or available to visit the workplace, CMC have a student support officer that offers one on one support to students experiencing difficulty in the workplace, personal issues affecting study, or to deal with conflict resolution. Our support officer can be contacted on 1300 364 383.
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy – Students who identify as having any language, literacy or numeracy support needs will be provided with an LLN Assessment. Results from the assessment will be used to determine the level of support required. In some cases this may just require additional withdrawal time, in other cases extra visits by a trainer may be needed or modified assessment tasks developed.
- Mobile phone / email – All trainers have a mobile number and email address which is readily available to students. This ensures our students can access field based trainers during working hours. Trainers are accessible on their work mobile on some weekends and some evenings for student support if required.
- 1300 number – To ensure costs to students are minimal; our campuses are available on a 1300 number. This enables students in all locations to call us for the cost of a local call. Just be aware that the 1300 number is not accessible from a mobile phone.
- Broadband Internet access – Students have access to the internet on campus either by using the training services computer or through wireless connection with personal laptops.
- Queensland Indigenous Mentor – As we have a high number of indigenous students, CMC has employed the services of an Indigenous Mentor who is an elder in the local community. The Mentors role is to support students with cultural, personal, centre or family issues, and offering community service networks and centre training if required. In addition cultural awareness training is sourced and provided to centre staff supporting indigenous trainees / apprentices at no cost to the employer.
- Student Web Portal – CMC offer a comprehensive student-only section of this website providing student portals, access to discussion boards, current newsletters and timetables. Visit here for more information.
- Chat room – A trainer facilitates an online chat session weekly for students seeking peer support, task support etc.
- Newsletter – A quarterly newsletter is issued to all students and employers providing latest news, events and industry related topics. See the latest newsletter.
- Books of readings - Books of readings are provided to each student as part of their course materials. These readings have been carefully selected by our course writers to provide support and learning material closely related to the content of each portfolio. All students are provided with their own copy of each book of readings related to their course.
- Monthly contact – In addition to all requirements under our training and delivery strategy, trainers provide monthly contact to all students, taking time to consult with both the student and supervisor by phone, fax or email.
- Student bag – A student carry bag is provided to all students on enrolment for storage of learning materials.
- Graduation – A yearly graduation ceremony is held in each state provided free of charge to students allowing them to celebrate with family and peers. Students receive participation certificates and a gift.
- Student awards – Each year some students are recognised for personal achievements and recognition is provided by way of a certificate and a gift voucher for professional development and training.
- Access and Equity – An access and equity officer provides support to students by way of providing multicultural networks, interpreter services, resources, community support agency links etc. In addition this staff member supports students who may be returning to work after an extensive break, those with young children trying to source child care or students with additional needs. View our Access and Equity policy for further details.
- CD – Although not a compulsory part of the course, students are provided with a CD of course materials if they so choose to work on a computer rather than print based materials.
- Cybertots – CMC has purchased access to Cybertots materials which is a virtual childcare centre. This suits visual learners or those with a passion for on line learning. Cybertots is available on the CD or online.
- Student cards – Student cards are issued to all students who provide a photo at no cost.
- Guest speakers – Guest speakers are sourced and provided as an additional support / professional development activity for all students at no cost.
- Professional development – All students receive a discount on any professional development workshops they wish to attend – first aid, CPR, food safety, asthma management, EpiPen, and a variety of industry related topics are available to support their job role.
- Library - CMC has a library of resources related to children’s services available for students to use while on-campus at Melbourne or Brisbane. Students can visit the campus and use the resources while on-site. If there are specific resources students require which are not available at the college library, students can request the college to consider buying the resource so it is available for the student to use.
- Flexible delivery – CMC offer flexibility in delivery and assessment. Units of competency have been clustered together to reduce repetition. All assessment tasks have options for presentation and/or completion of work. All types of learners are catered for, and students are provided with opportunities to complete tasks electronically or in written form. Classes are combined with workplace learning to provide variety, peer support and allow hands on practical application of theory.
